When You Find Out It Wasn’t True

We recently watched a movie about Lance Armstrong. I was deeply troubled by it, while Ray was completely unaffected.

I don’t know if this means I’m experiencing PTSD from so many situations in the past where I had such confidence in individuals who ended up “showing their colors” as someone I didn’t recognize. What they represented was not who they were. Even writing this is difficult for me, because every time I wanted to believe that people I called “Friends” had the best intentions, and would certainly right the wrongs if they could have seen them.

I know I have been shown my own flaws on many occasions, and my heart was to correct anything that I needed to correct as soon as possible. Why would anyone continue in an error once they saw it was wrong?

Well, the movie showed a man who achieved great things and ultimately was seduced by his pride to maintain a façade that lead him to do things he probably never would have imagined in the beginning. He ended up deceiving the whole world for a season, only to be stripped of all of the honor he had received in his great accomplishments. Unfortunately, in the end, his choices that brought him to great power and circumstance ended up marring his reputation forever.

He lead others to his error and seemed to be unapologetic of the impact it had on those he once cared about.

One of the most poignant scenes was a woman who turned her life around because of one of his speeches. While she was speaking to him and so grateful, he never broke his cover of knowing that his speeches were a farce.

So where does that put us in the grand scheme of humanity? What happened to someone like her when it was revealed that he was deceiving everyone?

I think those who take good advice are going to profit from it, no matter the source. I think of the ass who spoke to Balaam in the story I read in the Bible. The fact that an ass spoke to a human by the hand of God just shows that truth is truth, no matter where it comes from. If we take it to heart, we will be a beneficiary of truth. If we continue in pride, or any of the other things that are born in the heart of all mankind, we will eventually suffer the consequences of those decisions.

The Bible also has a great example of someone who heard the truth and was helped by it – even though it was from an unexpected source. When Abigail ran out to meet David, and begged him to reconsider his decision to kill her whole household because of her wicked husband, David heard her, and he did a 180. He blessed her for her advice, and was spared from making a terrible mistake.

I hope and pray that I will always have a heart to hear the truth of a matter no matter how it comes about, and to order my decisions on true wisdom from above.

About Me

Thinking about the line from Karen Carpenter’s song, “…don’t worry that it’s not good enough for anyone else to hear…” I have been inspired to “just sing” (and write, and share).

I produced a weekly blog for a little over a year, but now I’m committed to one article a month. I hope to give a little inspiration to those passing by, either through my blog articles or within the other pages I’ve created here.
