Music Milestone

When I made the decision to create my own website and incorporate music from my YouTube channel, I faced a lot of new challenges. The greatest hurdle was how to create a sustainable set up that I could manage on my own for recording my songs. I tried several different methods including using a wireless microphone & small amp to try to get a simple live recording of a song where the piano didn’t overpower my vocals. However, I found that the videos turned out grainy because I had to set the camera too far away to get a full room sound.

Last week, I accidentally found the answer, and I’m so excited! I did one take of the song with the camera facing me. The picture was good but the piano was still overpowering. Then I tried something I’ve never done. I set up the camera right next to me, and introduced the song. Then I turned the camera to face our big window while I played the song. I discovered that the camera microphone was right next to me and picked up my voice at a good balance between vocals and piano! So when I brought both takes into my video editor (I use Wondershare Filmora), I found I could mix the video I liked with the sound from the second recording in a couple of spots where the two takes  matched pretty well.

This discovery led me to the knowledge that I can simplify this process by using 2 cameras (our Osmo camera and my iPhone) at the same time, positioned where I did the first and second take last week. I won’t have to work so hard to match them up, because they will be essentially the same recording from 2 different angles! I finally feel I have a way to reach my goal of logging the songs I have written through the years on my YouTube channel for whoever might appreciate them. I think I have about 30 songs to go, and a few unfinished ones that may percolate to the place of recording before I feel like I have fulfilled this dream that has been in the making for over 20 years.

If you have about 3 minutes, please check out my song, “HIGHWAY OF HOLINESS,” and let me know what you think!

About Me

Thinking about the line from Karen Carpenter’s song, “…don’t worry that it’s not good enough for anyone else to hear…” I have been inspired to “just sing” (and write, and share).

I produced a weekly blog for a little over a year, but now I’m committed to one article a month. I hope to give a little inspiration to those passing by, either through my blog articles or within the other pages I’ve created here.
