I just returned from a week-long trip to Tennessee with my oldest daughter and her oldest son. We flew on four planes, stayed in an Atlanta airport hotel the first and last night, and spent five nights at my middle daughter and her husband’s home in Ooltewah, Tennessee. We had lots of adventures, and one day I chose to stay “home” while they went to Dig’N Zone Theme Park a couple of hours away. I really thought that would be the favorite memory for my grandson.
On the way back to our hotel for the last night in Atlanta, we stopped at Flower Child (“Healthy Food For A Happy World”) for lunch, and I was feeling a little nostalgic with all of the happy, colorful sayings displayed throughout the restaurant. I asked my grandson, “What was your favorite thing on our trip?” and I was surprised to hear him say “playing Minecraft.” I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised, since he was allowed to play a video game he doesn’t have at home. Then he added he really liked swimming, too…
Then my daughter asked me what was my favorite, and I told her I couldn’t think of what my answer was. But I’ve been thinking about it a lot since then.
The memories that keep percolating to the top for me are the ones of meaningful conversation with each of them. The few minutes at a time among all of the activity where I felt that heart to heart connection with my daughters, son-in-law, and grandson that helped me learn a little more about each of them, and feel like our relationships grew deeper. We shared meals, played games, built with Legos, talked, laughed, sang together, spent time at the pool, and visited my son-in-law’s folks for an afternoon. All of those moments presented opportunities for building favorite memories, but each of us will carry different ones based on our own vantage point.
