Gospel Hymns and Songs-Author Unknown

These are beautiful songs we heard at special events through the years. I created sheet music for some of them when I was working on a compilation song book called “Songs We Love” for my church about 15 years ago, but I wasn’t able to find publisher or authorship information on them at that time. Now I’m working on a new compilation song book that will be called “Cherished Hymns” and I’m hoping I can get the information for some unanswered questions and pay the proper artists for their work when I seek print licensing for these songs in this new book. If you happen to have an old CD or cassette tape with the original sleeve for any of these songs, you may be able to find the writer credits on the inside of the sleeve where the songs (and often lyrics) are listed! Please leave any information you have on any of these songs in the comments below.

ALL I ASK OF THEE
Verse 1: My load may be heavy as I walk this pilgrim way; Trials and fears may press so hard, and doubts may come to me; No matter what the world may do, with all my heart I pray; “I need thee Lord be with me,” That’s all I ask of thee.
CHORUS: I do not ask for worldly gain; I do not ask for wealth or fame; I do not ask of thee a lighter load to bear; I’ll gladly go where you send; If I can only walk with Him; “I need thee Lord, be with me,” That’s all I ask of thee.
Verse 2: I will be faithful to you Lord; I’ll work for you each day; I’ll try to follow thee dear Lord; Though doubt may cloud the way; But when my life is finished, I now make this my plea: “I need thee Lord be with me,” That’s all I ask of thee.

ANYTHING (SEARCH MY HEART, LORD)
CHORUS:
Search my heart, Lord. Find anything, anything that keeps me from you; Find everything, Everything that leads me away from truth; I’m asking you now, Lord, know my heart; Ev’ry little secret, hidden part; And what you ask of me Lord, I’ll do. Anything
Verse 1: Lord, don’t let me wander, don’t let me stray; So far that I would stumble and lose my way; Don’t let me grow careless, Help me be strong; A vessel of honor that is yours alone.
Verse 2: Help me be humble, Keep me free from sin; Let my heart be clean and pure within; Let me be a witness, an example to see; For others who are looking for an answer in me.

AS ONLY YOU CAN (I’M NOT ASKING FOR MYSELF)
Verse 1:
Lord, you told us to ask, and you would grant it; Just knock and you will open the door; So this petition in haste, before the Master’s throne; and I know there are blessings in store.
CHORUS: I’m not asking for myself this time; Tho’ my request needs an answer divine; I have a friend that’s in need of the touch of your hand; so touch him/her and heal him/her as only you can.
Verse 2: We must praise your name for our weakness; Lord, only then with your strength we all feel; And while you’re touching and blessing this friend of mine; I am sharing and my faith is healed.

BROKEN VESSELS
Verse 1: One day throughout the market place a potter searched and roamed; He was looking for a vessel to purchase for His own; There were many brought before Him there, all shiny, bright, and new; But He shook His head, and told them “No, These vessels will not do.”
CHORUS: Bring me broken vessels, ones the world has thrown away; I will take them in my able hands, and make them over new; Just bring me broken vessels, and see what I can do!
Verse 2: I was so lost and scarred by sin until I realized; Unless I sought the Master’s touch, my soul would not survive; So I brought my vessel as it was, and gave the Lord control; Now by grace I’m bound for Heaven and my vessel overflows!

CHILDLIKE FAITH
Verse 1:
Childlike faith can move a mountain from your way; It can make the blackest night the brightest day; Faith can give you strength to conquer every giant that you face; The greatest power known to man is simple childlike faith.
CHORUS: Childlike faith God understands; Childlike faith moves a father’s strong hand; No, you’r not helpless, but it’s a great big world you have to face; You may be low but you can grow in childlike faith.
Verse 2: Just a tiny seed of faith is all you need; Planted deep in the Father’s will becomes a mighty tree; Winds my rage against your branches to cause your faith to sway; But you can weather any storm through simple childlike faith.

CHILDREN LET NOT YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED
Verse 1:
I remember Sunday morning, sitting on my Papa’s knee; The congregation singing “Rock of Ages cleft for me,” The preacher spoke of heaven, and he warned about the fires of hell; He taught the love of Jesus drawing life from a living well.
CHORUS: Children let not your hearts be troubled by things you can do nothing about; For His eye is on the sparrow, and He sure won’t let you down.
Verse 2: Those days are gone, and there’s been tempest, I’ve been out upon the stormy sea; When noone could help but Jesus and His love delivered me; So I stand on the promise, “Safe in the Master’s hands;” And I don’t have to worry ’cause it’s all part of His plan.

COMFORT ME
Verse 1: When life’s dark storms of fear you dread; Clouds of doubt hang o’er your head; The hand of fate keeps knocking at your door; Just call His name and He’ll be there; To take your troubles and your cares; He will never leave you there alone.
CHORUS: Comfort me, Jesus with your steady hand; Comfort me, lead me to the promised land; When troubles o’er my bosom roll; Come pour yourself out o’er my soul; Master, won’t you come and comfort me.
Verse 2: Sometimes while trav’ling on life’s sea; The way is often hard to see; Darkness seems to hide each ray of light; Just call his name and He’ll be there; He’ll take your sorrow and your care; He will never leave you there alone.

DON’T LOSE YOUR VISION
Verse 1: As we travel along this pilgrim way, there are heartaches and burdens to bear; But with a vision of Jesus and Heaven in view, our cross is much lighter to bear.
CHORUS: Don’t lose your vision of Jesus; Keep your eyes ever on Him; Many friends and dear loved ones have lost their way; They have lost their vision of Him.
Verse 2: I remember the time, I remember the place where my Jesus so sweetly came in; And He took all the burdens I carried so long, when I first caught a vision of Him.
Verse 3: Don’t ever look back, just keep travelling on, There is nothing in this world of sin; Don’t ever look back on these earthly things lest you lose your vision of Him.

HE IS MY EVERYTHING
Verse 1: I remember my days of darkness without sunshine or sight to lead my way; Then a whisper of His voice softly called me to the arms of my Maker to stay.
CHORUS: He is my reason for living; He is the King of all Kings; I long to be His posession; He is my everything.
Verse 2: After the lightning and thunder, After the last bell has rung; I want to bow down before Jesus and hear Him say “Well done.”

HUMBLE THYSELF (TO WALK WITH GOD)
Verse 1: If you would have the dear savior from Heaven; Walk by thy side from the morn ’til the evening; There is a rule that each day you must follow; Humble thyself to walk with God.
CHORUS: Humble thyself and the Lord will draw near thee; Humble thyself and his presence will cheer thee; He will not walk with the proud or the scornful; Humble thyself to walk with God.
Verse 2: Just as the Lord in the world’s early ages; Walked and communed with the prophets and sages; He will come now if you meet the conditions; Humble thyself to walk with God.
Verse 3: Just as the stream fins a bed that is lowly; So Jesus walks with the pure and the Holy; Cast out thy pride and in heartfelt contrition; Humble thyself to walk with God.

I FEEL UNWORTHY
Verse 1: When I think of how He died, How they pierced Him in the side, I feel unworthy. How the blood came pouring down, and it splattered on the ground, I feel unworthy.
CHORUS: I know that I’m unworthy of His blessings, so undeserving of His love for me. Each day I tell Him so as down life’s road I go, I feel unworthy.
Verse 2: When I kneel to him in prayer, the He whipers “I am here,” I feel unworthy. When my worries bring me grief, and He bids me sweet relief, I feel unworthy.

JUST LIKE YOU
Verse 1: Take this body that you made for me, I give it, Lord, to you; Take my heart, come and change the old parts, cleanse and set me free; My eyes to see where you may lead, Lord, these old ears to hear reproof; Just take this willing vessel, Lord, and make it just like you.
CHORUS: Just like you, Lord, just like you I long to be; To stand alone when you say, “Stand,” for Lord, you stood for me; To be a beacon in a dark night, to always shine a Godly light; This piece of clay can be made new to stand up just like you.
Verse 2: The potter spins at a potter’s wheel, and he makes the bowl come true; The weaver watches close to his loom, the tiny threads that come undone; The Master of our master plan, He can make a body new; He can mend the broken threads that loose, He can make them just like new.

KEEP ON WALKIN’
Verse 1: Are you weary in well doing, walking on this road to new Jerusalem? Are you hoping and a praying, looking any minute for the Lord to come? And do you see a lot of pleasant looking places where you might lay down to take a rest? Well, if you do, take a look at all the faces there, the sadness will tell you that it’s best
CHORUS: To keep on walkin’. You don’t know how far you’ve come, keep on walkin’; For all you know it might be done, and the Father might be standin’ up right now to give the call, and end it all, so keep on walkin’.
Verse 2: Now, if you need a feeling to keep you on this road you started trav’ling on; You’re gonna have some trouble, learning that it’s faith that keeps you movin’ on. And then the Lord will start you off from sitting, but sometimes you have to make a stand; Standing’s not another word for quitting – It’s just taking a tighter hold on His hand.

LORD, DON’T LET ME FAIL YOU (Author found! Ike Davis & Ray Heady)
Verse 1: His wonderful salvation has been so good to me; Since I met Christ, my savior, He cleansed and pardoned me; My pray’r to God in heaven each day I live will be, “Lord don’t let me fail you, or lose my faith in thee.”
CHORUS: I’d rather be forsaken upon a lonely strand, or be alone in prison or in some no-man’s land; I’d rather be an outcast adrift upon the sea, than to grieve thy Holy Spirit or lose my faith in thee.
Verse 2: I know you’ll never fail me while in my life down here; I know you’ll never leave me abandoned to my fears; And when I face temptation upon life’s troubled sea, I know you’ll hear me calling you, ever close to be.

MY GOD IS ABLE
Verse 1: When the children of Israel began to moan and complain at the water’s edge about the shape they were in; Then Moses stepped forth and said, “Keep the faith! God is on our side; He’s gonna lead us across the water no matter how deep or wide!” for
CHORUS: My God Is Able. Yes, he’s able; Nothing is impossible with Him, if you just believe; for He can conquer anything that stands in the way of victory; Yes, He is able and willing to do whatever you need!
Verse 2: Now you may not be frightened by old Pharoah and all his men; but I can tell you old Satan’s still fighting and he thinks he’s gonna win; But the same God that delivered all of His people way back then; He’s got the same strength and power, and He can do it again! For

NOT MY WILL, THINE BE DONE
Verse 1: If I ask for things that I should not ask for, and if I pray for things selfishly; If I ask for myself and not for my neighbor, lift this veil from my eyes, and let me see.
CHORUS: “Not my will, thine be done” prayed Jesus; Let this same prayer be mine every day; When this robe of flesh that I wear makes me falter; Guide my feet, hold my hand all the way.
Verse 2: Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane until His sweat as drops of blood, they did fall; “Father if possible, let this cup pass from me; but not my will, thine be done just the same.”

ONLY A FEW AT THE CROSS
Verse 1: I was troubled deep in spirit today at the church where I worship and pray; Just a handful of people there to see in the place where so many ought to be; and I wondered why we didn’t close the door, why we tried to have the service any more; Then a voice within me whispered, “Child, rejoice! There were only a few at the cross.”
CHORUS: Just a few at the cross at Calvary; Just a faithful few who gladly faced the loss of the world and its gain to be with Jesus; Yes, there were only a few at the cross.
Verse 2: And I thought of Jesus walking by the sea, of the few who came when He called, “Follow me;” Just a handful of men, but they became teachers of the truth that set the world a flame; And I thought of great cathedrals in our land, of the saints that numbered as the ocean sands; Of the miracles He’d done with just a few, and remembered how He changed my whole life, too.

REACH OUT TODAY
Verse 1: If you are burdened with sorrow, if you are filled with despair; Jesus can heal ev’ry heartache – Just reach out and you’ll find Him there.
CHORUS: Reach out today and touch Him, the one who can set you free; Reach out today and touch Him, this Jesus of Galilee.
Verse 2: Who hears you crying at midnight? Who hears your heart’s earnest prayer? Jesus is ready to help you – Just reach out and you’ll find Him there.

SERVE ME BY FAITH
Verse 1: I have been to the place where I felt not His grace or His tender touch; I’ve reached out with my hand, there was nothing to hold, It hurt so much; Not a friend could I find and I thought in my mind, “God has left me too;” But if I’m not afraid, a voice seems to say, “Lo, I’m with you.”
CHORUS: And He says, “Child, serve me by faith and not what you feel; Feelings aren’t always real, they can deceive; For there’s one thing that’s true, I will always love you, on this you can stand; When you can’t feel my hand, you must believe.”
Verse 2: Now, He knows how I feel, He knows my life’s real down here on earth; When my feelings are gone, I need something that’s strong, I have His word; So through testing and trial, and through every mile; I’ll just recall what takes me through it all is my faith in God.

SHINE YOUR LIGHT:
Verse 1: I have wandered and strayed, like a sheep from the fold; Many times, I have sought my own way; Please be patient while I’m learning to lean on your love; and walk close beside me each day.
CHORUS: Lord, please shine your light all around me; So bright that I’m sure to see; I’m just a child who wants to be what you’d have me to be; Lord, please shine your light on me.
Verse 2: I don’t ever want to be like the man I once was; So proud with a heart made of stone; Always running away from love when it called; Just to cry bitter tears all alone.
Verse 3: The day is coming, you can be sure, the Lord will come for His own; I want to be one that He finds standing true; I want to hear Him say “Well done, Enter in, faithful one; Here’s a robe and a crown just for you.”

THE PLAN OF SALVATION
Verse 1: One morning at daybreak as the crowd slowly gathered, they were walking my Savior up Calvary’s hill; So sad was His face that the birds hushed their singing; like a lamb he was humble to his Father’s own will.
Verse 2: On the cross as they hung Him in shame was forsaken; as they drove those cruel nails in His hands and His feet; As death closed His eyes, His cry went to heaven; “Oh Father forgive them,” I heard Him repeat.
Verse 3: In a tomb He was laid but death could not hurt Him; He was God’s only son in this world of sin; On the cross He was given the plan of salvation; I want to thank Jesus for He’s coming again.
Verse 4: I want to thank Jesus for the plan of salvation; To say Lord I love you, for you understand; I want to be there on that great judgement morning; To kiss all the nailprints in His hands and His feet.

THE SEARCH IS OVER
Verse 1: He knows what you’re going through, He’s walked in your shoes; And he’s felt the pain ’til his tears fell like rain, and his heart broke in two; He knows how it feels alone when all of His friends were gone; And He walked up that hill doing his Father’s will to die for you.
CHORUS: The search is over, you found a friend for life; He’ll lead you from the dark into His heavenly light; The search is over though your heart’s breaking; Jesus is waiting – the search is over.
Verse 2: We all have a choice to make, There’s two roads to take; Have you carried sin’s load? Went down the wrong road? Have you lost your way? Now the Father stands at the door, and he walks down the road once more; And He sees you coming home, He’s waited so long. It’s homecoming day!

WE’VE GOT THE POWER
Verse 1: Give me your hand, let’s agree together; that all of our enemies will crumble at our feet; For whate’er we bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; At the name of Jesus, Satan has to flee.
CHORUS: We’ve got the power in the name of Jesus; We’ve got the power in the name of the Lord; Though Satan rages, we cannot be defeated; We’ve got the power in the name of the Lord.
Verse 2: For many years now, Satan’s tried to stop us; but the church of Jesus is still alive; Like a mighty army we keep marching onward; Winning ev’ry battle with the Lord by our side.

WHERE WILL YOU BE (A MILLION YEARS FROM NOW)
Verse 1: Just one life to live on earth and it swiftly passes by, From the moment of our birth ’till our time has come to die; God has given us this choice to decide our destiny; in a million years, WHERE WILL YOU BE?
CHORUS: WHERE WILL YOU BE a million years from now? Will you be happy? Will you be singing? While ages roll throughout eternity, I ask this question, WHERE WILL YOU BE?
Verse 2: In the Bible we are told of a day that soon will come When the people of this earth will be gathered at God’s throne; And the books are open wide for all the world to see: Will he say “Well done?” WHERE WILL YOU BE?

YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO LOVE ME
Verse 1: When I look at you, I realize the little that I know; When I look at you, I realize how far I have to go; Oh, my mind cannot conceive the thought of why you loved me so; for I’m so far from what you are, and I really move so slow.
CHORUS: You didn’t have to love me, but you did; You didn’t have to heal me, but you did; You didn’t have to die on Calvary for me, but you did, but you did; You didn’t have to save me, but you did; Or send your spirit to sway me, but you did; You didn’t have to love me save me, heal me, but you did.
Verse 2: When others look at me, I hope they’ll see reflections there of you; When others look at me, I hope that they will want to know you too; For if they can’t see your love in me, then I’ve failed at what I do; Tho’ I’m still far from what you are, I’m becoming more like you.
