Today I stopped by the Middle School where I worked as a Registrar for 4 1/2 years. Even though I don’t miss working at the school with all of the behavior issues of the students, sometimes I miss the life of working with a group of people that I care about outside my home.
I got to spend some time with Mary, who is the Queen at the middle school where we worked together. My office was next to hers, and she was instrumental in my career path after 20 years of home schooling my 5 kids. I told several previous coworkers at the school about my decision to retire early last year, and that I had “accidentally” earned a small pension after 7 years of working for the School District and Lane County. During my conversation with Mary and the others who walked in and out of the Staff Room, I realized what a great gift I have been given, in that I can do all of the work I am choosing to do now without the need to make an income for our household.
I’m still working almost full time, but all of it is with flexible hours and a relaxed atmosphere (at home). The work I’m doing for the custom compilation song book is reminiscent of the data entry and spreadsheet work I did as a Registrar, because there are so many details to keep track of for the writer credits, copyright labels, and source music for each song. I keep feeling grateful for the techniques I came up with to manage so many intricate details of each student for scheduling each trimester at the Middle School.
When I left my Registrar job, it was because of a terrible situation that occurred followed by an epiphany that I wasn’t stuck and I could walk away. I really thought I would find work that would continue a career path for the next 6-7 years, but what happened was a series of events that led me to the decision to stop pursuing employment. I am beyond grateful for the blessing of doing what I love to do without having to worry about earning an income for the work. The “dream job” I have created in my retirement includes a variety of roles that feel very fulfilling. I am a Writer, Musician, Producer of Videos for both Ray and my You Tube channels, Singer-Songwriter, Administrative Secretary, Finance Manager, Publisher, Chef, Caregiver, and Homemaker.
As a side note, I’m almost finished with my video project chronicling the travel and tandem rides Ray and I enjoyed last year on or 35th Anniversary trip! The one I’m working on now is the 7th (and last) video of the series which showcases Whidbey Island, and crossing Deception Pass Bridge. If you have about 9 minutes, check out the 6th video in the series of our adventure on Lopez Island, Washington by clicking on this link: 6-Lopez Island
