Over the past two months, I’ve had opportunities to help some of my kids with big life events. I’m thankful for the freedom I have had to pivot my daily activities at a moment’s notice so I could be available for my loved ones. I know that it is a huge blessing and I don’t want to take it for granted in the seasons when I begin to be less busy. (I have a tendency to start worrying I won’t have anything to do when I am coming to the end of a big project.)
For example, the song book project I’ve been working on for a year and a half is coming to a close, and I was thinking about trying to create a business at home to create extra income in our retirement (Ray is a few years off still). But then I planned 2 parties, was with one daughter for the birth of her first baby, another daughter through a dramatic loss, travelled back and forth between Oregon and Tennessee, had guests & dinner parties, spent time recovering emotionally and physically, and continued to maintain the necessary things of our household for over 2 months. It finally occurred to me that it’s “ok” for me to prioritize the needs of those I love over my weekly blog, projects I want to finish, etc.
I came to the conclusion that I can finish the song book when I have health and blocks of time enough to complete the proofreading & testing phase so that a final draft is ready for print. I also decided I am going to transition from a weekly to a monthly blog. After all, I only produced one post in October, and I’m finishing this article on the last day of November. I think there will be more changes to my daily and weekly routine as I approach the golden age of 60, but I’m not sure of how it will all materialize in real life.
I just know that today I’m thankful for the lessons I’ve learned recently and the life experiences I’ve been able to have as an older, retired woman. I just know I want to embrace changes in my little life and the new challenges I face with an open heart and mind. I’ve seen a few people grow old gracefully, and I want to be one of them.
